A spinoff of the TV hit show The Big Bang Theory has been confirmed, focusing on the upbringing of Jim Parson’s character Sheldon.

Titled Young Sheldon, the series will air this coming season, starring young Iain Artmitage as Sheldon Cooper and Parson as the narrator.

The 9-year-old rising star appeared in Steve Harvey’s Big Shots, and is currently starring on Sky Atlantic’s Big Little Lies, alongside Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and Shailene Woodley.

CBS has confirmed the show will be a comedy, sharing a similar tone to the cult TV show Malcolm In The Middle, also about a young child who outsmarts his parents.

The show, created by Big Bang authors Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, is set during the childhood of Parsons’ character on the original series.

The precocious Sheldon is living with his family in Texas and attending high school.

There is no indication any Big Bang characters will feature in the show in a younger form.

Jon Favreau, the creator of Disney’s CGI hit The Jungle Book and the Marvel studios precursor Iron Man, will direct the first episode.

The show will be penned by Steve Molaro, who has confirmed the original Big Bang Theory will come to an end in the next season.

“I’m going to move forward along with Chuck that ten is the end unless we’re told otherwise,” he told the Hollywood Reporter.

The show has been nominated for 29 Primetime Emmy Awards and won eight, including three Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series Awards for Jim Parsons in 2010, 2011 and 2014.

An air date for Young Sheldon has not yet been announced.
