Elizabeth Chambers on where she stands with Armie Hammer amid divorce, scandal
Elizabeth Chambers says she and estranged husband Armie Hammer are “in a really great place” amid their divorce and his cannibal scandal.
The Bird Bakery founder filed for divorce from the “Call Me by Your Name” star in July 2020 after 10 years of marriage and two children, 5-year-old Ford and 7-year-old Harper.
“Our divorce is not finalized. But we are in a really great place. We talk all the time,” she told E! News in a new Q&A. “We’re committed fully and wholly to our children, and to being together as much as possible in a non-romantic way for our kids.
“Kids need their mom; kids need their dad. So there’s nothing we won’t do.”
Chambers, 40, admitted there have been some co-parenting challenges along the way – given that, shortly after she ended the marriage, women came forward and accused Hammer of sexual abuse and rape. Since then, Chambers said Hammer has been in recovery, by way of rehab for drug and sex issues.
“Armie has been focused on his healing. There’s the oxygen mask theory: You can’t really take care of someone until you are taken care of,” she explained. “There’s a reason on the plane they say, ‘Secure your own mask before helping others.’ He has been very busy securing his own mask.
“My mask has been secured, [the kids’] masks are on, so right now it’s really been a lot about focusing on them, protecting them.”
With her mask “secured,” Chambers, who is dating a new man, can look back fondly on her and 36-year-old Hammer’s marriage despite its ending and the constant controversy surrounding him.
“We grew up together and we have so many memories. We traveled the world and that is so beautiful,” she reflected. “I do feel like I look back at it as a different phase in my life, but I don’t necessarily think we’re starting over. I think we’re just continuing on our path, with a shifted perspective.”
Chambers revealed she ultimately watched Discovery+’s tell-all docu-series “House of Hammer” with her “support system” after initially deciding to avoid it.
“It was obviously heartbreaking on so many levels and very painful. But at the same time, it exists,” she shared. “The past is the past and all we can do is take this as a moment to learn and listen, and hopefully process and heal in every capacity.”
She added that she was “definitely surprised” by what she saw but noted, “I think that’s to be expected.”
“…it didn’t feel great, especially when you feel like you have done that work,” she continued, “but the moral of the story is that work is never done.”
Save for vehemently denying the allegations against him, the “Social Network” star has not publicly commented on the content in “House of Hammer,” which featured Hammer’s ex Courtney Vucekovich as well as some of his other alleged victims detailing their harrowing experiences.
Following a woman named Effie’s claims that Hammer raped her, the Los Angeles Police Department launched an investigation into Hammer’s actions. The case is still ongoing.
