Prince Charles heading to Israel later this month for a scheduled visit, according to a press release from Clarence House.
During his Jan. 23 visit – his first in four years – the British royal is set to attend the World Holocaust Forum in addition to other engagements on behalf of the British government, the release states.
The World Holocaust Forum, a series of events focused on preserving memories of Holocaust atrocities, will be held at the World Holocaust Remembrance Centre in Jerusalem. This year’s forum will commemorate the 75th anniversary of
the liberation of former World War II concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Charles will also visit the West Bank, what British government calls the “Occupied Palestinian Territories,” while abroad.
This isn’t the first time the prince has visited Israel. He also visited in 1995 and 2016. This is the first time, however, that the royal is scheduled to undergo several engagements, according to the release.
Charles’s wife, Duchess Camilla, will also be traveling as part of her official duties in January.
The duchess is set to visit Poland to attend a service at the former Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp on Jan. 27. The date also marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
This is Camilla’s third official visit to the country.
In June 2018, Charles’ son Prince William made a historic visit to Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian territories.
The Duke of Cambridge visited Amman and Jerash in Jordan, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv in Israel, and Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, between June 24 and 28.
It was the first official royal visit to Israel and the West Bank since 1948, when Britain’s 25-year control of the region (known as the British Mandate) ended on the eve of Israel’s independence.
